Securities Enforcement & Market Oversight Training, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2-6 December 2013
The CVM Brazil hosted a training program entitled "Securities Enforcement & Market Oversight" which took place in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, from 2-6 December 2013. The training program was open to all IOSCO members.
9th Taipei Corporate Governance Forum, Taipei, 28-29 November 2013
Hosted by the Financial Supervisory Commission of Chinese Taipei, the Forum focused on the themes of "shaping corporate governance culture and raising corporate value" and "tapping into market mechanisms, strengthening corporate governance." Additionally, separate roundtables on the second day of the Forum looked into the issues of "sharing of corporate governance experience" and "case studies of corporate governance practice."
IOSCO Secretary General, Mr. David Wright, was one of the keynote speakers for the Forum.
UK Financial Conduct Authority's International Regulators' Seminar 2013, 27-29 November, London
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) held its first annual International Regulators' Seminar in London on 27-29 November.
The Seminar, which built on the success of the previous Financial Services Authority's (FSA) annual events, aimed to bring together regulators from a wide range of jurisdictions to engage in interactive sessions on key regulatory issues.
The theme of the seminar was "Putting Consumers at the Heart of Regulation", and included sessions on
- Regulating and supervising Markets
- Tackling market abuse, money laundering and financial crime
- Competitions role in regulating financial services
- Regulating the consumer credit market, and
- Applying behavioural economics to regulation
The Canadian Equity Market: Structural Challenges Amidst Rapid Change, Toronto, 21 November 2013
The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) and the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) invited all IOSCO members for an informative, thought-provoking and interactive day of discussions with industry experts and regulators on the regulatory challenges in the Canadian market.
Topics included:
- The role of regulators in today’s market structure and the challenges faced by Canadian regulators.
- The evolution of market structure and the regulatory framework fostering the current competitive landscape in North America.
- How market quality is defined by various stakeholders in a rapidly changing environment.
Islamic Financial Products and Risk Management of Islamic Financial Institutions, Karachi, Pakistan, 18-19 November 2013
The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, along with the Islamic Research and Training Institute held a 2 day workshop on "Islamic Financial Products and Risk Management of Islamic Financial Institutions", in Karachi – Pakistan, from the 18th – 19th November, 2013.
14th Emerging Markets Programme (EMP) from 6-8 November 2013 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC), the training arm of the Securities Commission Malaysia organised the 14th Emerging Markets Programme (EMP) from 6-8 November 2013 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Themed "Driving Sustainable Growth and Global Regulatory Reform: Role of Emerging Markets", this three-day annual programme was designed to cater to senior regulators and participants in the emerging markets. Among the topics discussed at the EMP 2013 were:
- Role of Emerging Markets
- Regulatory reforms post-Asian financial crisis: Lessons from emerging markets
- Strengthening capital market development: Lessons from emerging markets
- Role of the Islamic Capital Market for Emerging Markets
- Strengthening R2R cooperation and shaping global policies: "The voice of emerging markets"
World Capital Markets Symposium (WCMS), Kuala Lumpur, 22-23 October 2013
The Securities Commission, Malaysia hosted the WCSM on Redefining Markets: Sustaining Growth and Resilience, in conjunction with its 20th Anniversary. IOSCO Secretary General David Wright participated as a key speaker. Other speakers included Lord Adair Turner, Senior Fellow, Institute for New Economic Thinking and Former Chairman, Financial Services Authority, UK; The Honourable Sheila C Bair, Former Chairman, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, USA; and Dr Fareed Zakaria, Editor-at-Large of Time magazine and host of Fareed Zakaria GPS, CNN's flagship international affairs program.
The Prime Minister of Malaysia, The Honourable Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak delivered the keynote address.
Other significant speakers included ministers, policy makers, CEOs of leading corporates, academicians, financiers and economists from the region and globally.

Themed "Widening Market Connectivity in Islamic Finance", this three-day annual programme was designed to cater to a wide audience of both experienced practitioners and new entrants into the world of Islamic finance.
